Workplace Retaliation

Protecting Yourself: How to Document Workplace Retaliation and Fight Back

If you believe you are experiencing retaliation in the workplace, it is important to document all instances of retaliation to protect yourself and potentially build a case. Here are some tips for documenting workplace retaliation:

  • Write down the date and time of each instance of retaliation. This includes any negative comments, changes in job duties or responsibilities, or any other adverse actions taken against you.
  • Keep track of any witnesses who were present when the retaliation occurred. This includes coworkers, managers, or anyone else who may have witnessed the retaliation.
  • Save any emails, text messages, or other written communication that may be relevant to your case. This could include emails from your supervisor criticizing your work performance or emails from HR denying your request for time off.
  • Keep a record of any missed opportunities or benefits that you believe were denied to you as a result of the retaliation. This could include being passed over for a promotion, missing out on a bonus, or being excluded from important meetings or projects.
  • Seek out any documentation or policies related to your job duties or employment status. This could include your job description, employee handbook, or any written policies related to performance evaluations, raises, or promotions.
  • Consider reaching out to an employment lawyer or other legal professional for guidance on how to document workplace retaliation and protect your legal rights.

Remember, documenting workplace retaliation can be a critical step in protecting yourself and potentially building a case against your employer. If you believe you are experiencing retaliation, it is important to take action to protect yourself and seek out the support and resources you need to fight back.
